Farbenmix Imke sew along

I think I’ve mentioned earlier that the Crafty mamas have been having a sew along with the Imke pattern. I started out thinking I would make Gannon’s first, but then got a bit scared as the pattern version I had (from the “Sewing clothes kids love” book) didn’t have the split sides for the “boy” version – only for the “girl” version. The split version for both is available in the original paper pattern. I liked the look of the split version (see Sara’s stuff  for inspiration…it was these that made me want to try the pattern) and was keen to try it, but was too scared to cut up my good fabric and stuff it up if I didn’t do it right. So I decided to experiment with some old tshirts that were in the repurposing box.

Batman denim applique copied from a well loved “Batterang” (?) that Gannon has had for years that his dad made for him. He’s a rather cute bat with a smiley face. I think it’s supposed to be one of Batman’s weapons! It’s just made of cereal box cardboard, but it was integral to the intense Batman phase he went through a couple of years back and it’s lived to tell the tale. 

I started with just the 2 tshirts, but there wasn’t quite enough fabric for the sleeves so I think 4 tshirts ended up being used. Plenty of scraps left over for making some more repurposed tshirt undies now!

So here are the 3 Imke’s so far…

The “girl” version is much wider at the bottom (just a FYI if you’re thinking about sewing it and wondering which one to do).

The girls version is to fit my 4 year old, the boys is to fit my almost 8 year old and the racing car boys one is for my nephew who just turned 6. You can imagine how much wider the girls version is as it’s still wider than the larger version and it’s several sizes down.

Honestly, I’m not a big fan of the girls version. I like warmer clothing to be fairly close fitting so that you don’t get draughts going up their shirts. Being a fairly petite little lady too, this just swims on my Ruby.
